The New York City Human Rights Law

In order to prevent people from being discriminated against in the workplace the federal government passed Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which makes it illegal for employers to engage in employment discrimination because of an employee’s:

  • Race
  • Color
  • Gender
  • National origin
  • Ethnic identity
  • Religion

Employees in New York City receive further protection through the New York State and City Human Rights Laws. These laws make it illegal to discriminate against people because of their:

  • Gender identity
  • Sexual orientation
  • Marital status

The New York City Human Rights Law also prohibits discrimination based on the reasons prohibited by the federal law, but covers smaller employers – those having as little as four employees.
